Parenting is a beautiful journey filled with tender moments, but let’s be honest—some stages can be downright exhausting. One of those challenging periods? Growth spurts. These sudden bursts of development can turn your baby’s sleep routine upside down, leaving you wondering if you’ll ever sleep again.
If your little one is suddenly waking up more often, fussier than usual, or fighting naps like a mini ninja, you’re not alone. Growth spurts can wreak havoc on sleep, but with a little understanding and patience, you can help your baby (and yourself!) get the rest needed during these intense periods.
Although every baby is unique, most growth spurts happen around:
- 1-3 weeks
- 6 weeks
- 3 months
- 6 months
- 9 months
Each of these stages comes with major changes, and sleep disruptions are just part of the package.
✔️ Increased appetite – Your little one wants to feed constantly, even at night.
✔️ More wake-ups at night – Suddenly, those precious long stretches of sleep vanish.
✔️ Shorter, irregular naps – Your baby takes catnaps instead of full naps.
✔️ Extra fussiness and clinginess – They need more comfort and reassurance.
✔️ Noticeable growth – Baby seems bigger overnight (hello, snug onesies).
If you’re nodding along, chances are your baby is in the thick of a growth spurt. The good news? This phase doesn’t last forever, and there are ways to help your baby get better rest.
💡 Tip: Try offering a dream feed before you go to bed to help stretch their overnight sleep.
A simple routine can include:
✅ A warm bath
✅ Gentle massage
✅ Soft lullabies
✅ Dimming the lights
These little rituals create a sense of security, helping your baby settle despite the sleep disruptions.
If they wake up frequently, try comforting them with gentle rocking or a pacifier instead of immediately feeding (unless they’re truly hungry).
💡 Tip: Wearing your baby in a carrier during the day can help reduce fussiness and promote better sleep at night.
💡 Tip: Watch for your baby’s sleep cues—yawning, rubbing eyes, or staring off into space are signs they need rest.
Instead of stressing over schedules, focus on providing comfort and nourishment. The more supported your baby feels, the easier they’ll move through this phase.
The key is to stay patient, follow their lead, and know that better sleep is right around the corner.
🚩 Persistent poor sleep beyond two weeks
🚩 Signs of illness (fever, congestion, ear pulling, etc.)
🚩 Weight concerns (if they’re not gaining enough despite extra feeds)
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and consult your pediatrician.
Be flexible, offer extra feeds and cuddles, and remind yourself that this won’t last forever. Before you know it, you’ll be looking back at this stage, wondering where the time went.
So hang in there, grab some coffee, and lean into those baby snuggles. Better sleep is just around the corner!
