Ask Scary Mommy: How Can I Stop My Parents From Helicopter Grandparenting My Kid?

My grandparents are great for helping watch my kid, but they are too scared to let her play outside, even when they are watching. Every time I suggest a trip to the park or just letting her run in the backyard, they panic. They hover over her every move, refuse to let her climb the slide alone, and insist on holding her hand the entire time she walks on the grass. I appreciate the help, but I feel like they are teaching her to be afraid of normal childhood risks. How do I get them to back off without starting a war?

This is a tough spot because you need their help, but their anxiety is creating a different problem. The first step is to figure out what exactly they are scared of. Is it a fear of injury, a fear of being blamed if something happens, or just a generational shift in how they view safety? Often, grandparents feel a heightened sense of responsibility because they are not the parents. They worry that if your daughter scrapes a knee on their watch, you will think they were negligent.

Start with a calm, direct conversation outside of a stressful moment. Thank them for their help and acknowledge their love for your child. Then, gently explain the trade-off. Tell them that while safety matters, a childhood spent never taking a small risk can lead to a child who is anxious and lacks confidence. You can offer a compromise. For example, ask them to let her play on the grass while they sit nearby, or let her climb the first step of the slide while they spot her. Frame it as a team effort: "I need you to help me raise a brave kid, not just a safe one."

You might also need to set specific boundaries. If they cannot follow your rules about outdoor play, you may have to limit the time they spend watching her. That sounds harsh, but your job is to parent your child, not manage your parents' fears. If they truly cannot relax, consider finding a different sitter for outdoor time and using the grandparents for indoor activities. It is not ungrateful to insist on the childhood you want for your daughter.
