Central to their critique is the practice of spanking, which they suggest is emblematic of a broader ideology that emphasizes instant obedience, corporal punishment, and rigid family hierarchies.

These teachings advocate that adherence to these methods will ensure that children grow up to be faithful adherents to their faith. However, the McGinnises challenge the validity of these claims, suggesting that such approaches may not only be ineffective but could also be detrimental to children's emotional and psychological well-being. By questioning the foundations of these widely accepted practices, the book aims to foster a more compassionate and understanding approach to parenting within the Christian community.
