Dr. Randy Cale’s Terrific Parenting: Why all this talking and processing isn’t helping your child

In contemporary parenting, a well-intentioned mantra has taken hold: the imperative to constantly discuss and dissect a child's feelings. The approach is familiar, urging children to verbalize every emotional nuance with prompts like, "Let's talk about how you're feeling." However, emerging perspectives suggest this relentless focus on processing may inadvertently hinder rather than help emotional development.

Experts point out that an overemphasis on talking can train children to believe that feelings are problems to be solved through lengthy discussion, rather than natural, passing states. This can lead to a form of emotional indulgence, where children become stuck in a cycle of analyzing their upsets without learning to manage them. The constant parental interrogation can also reinforce negative emotions, giving them more power and attention than they warrant.

The critique is not that communication is unimportant, but that action and experience are more powerful teachers than conversation alone. Children build genuine resilience not by endlessly talking about frustration, but by navigating a challenging task. They develop true confidence not by discussing anxiety, but by successfully acting despite it. The goal is to guide children toward understanding that while their feelings are valid, they are also separate from their actions and choices.

Effective parenting, therefore, involves a balance. It provides a supportive space for a child to be heard, but then skillfully shifts focus toward constructive behavior and problem-solving. It teaches through doing, demonstrating that moving forward often comes from positive action, not just protracted analysis. The healthiest emotional growth occurs when children learn to acknowledge a feeling, and then, with parental guidance, learn to move through it and beyond.
