If you just felt a jolt, that was her mic dropping. In a recent conversation, renowned therapist Esther Perel dropped a truth bomb about modern parenting that most of us never see coming. She described a trap so common, so well-intentioned, that it has quietly taken over family life across the country.
Perel explained that many parents today have turned their homes into mini corporations. We manage schedules, optimize activities, and measure success like quarterly earnings. But in doing so, we have lost something essential. She warned that when parents become project managers for their children's lives, the emotional connection weakens. Kids start to feel like products to be improved rather than people to be known.
The trap is subtle. It looks like love. It looks like dedication. But underneath, it can create a deep loneliness in children. They get all the resources and none of the real presence. Perel said the antidote is not to do less, but to shift focus from achievement to attachment. She urged parents to ask a different question at the end of the day: not "What did you accomplish?" but "How did we connect?"
Her words hit hard because they ring true for so many families running on empty. The warning is not about abandoning goals. It is about remembering that the relationship itself is the goal. If that gets lost, no trophy or test score can replace it.
