From managing notifications to protecting privacy: 5 important digital skills every child should learn before high school

Teaching children to use technology responsibly is an ongoing challenge for modern parents. Many understand the importance of digital skills, but they also worry about how much exposure is too much before the digital world starts shaping their child's habits. Screens are now built into schoolwork and daily lessons. By the time kids enter high school, they are often expected to manage digital devices on their own.

However, knowing how to use a device is not the same as knowing how to use it wisely. Here are five essential digital skills every child should develop before reaching high school.

First, children need to learn how to manage notifications. Constant pings and alerts can destroy focus. Kids should understand how to silence non-essential alerts and set boundaries so they can concentrate on homework or sleep without interruption.

Second, protecting privacy is critical. Children must know not to share personal information like their full name, address, school name, or passwords. They should also understand how to recognize phishing attempts or suspicious messages that ask for private details.

Third, they need to practice critical thinking about online content. Not everything on the internet is true. Kids should learn to question sources, spot misleading headlines, and verify information before sharing it.

Fourth, digital communication skills matter. Children should know how to write clear, respectful messages and understand that tone can be easily misunderstood in text. They also need to learn when a conversation is better handled in person.

Finally, they must understand the concept of a digital footprint. Everything posted online can last forever. Kids should think before they post, comment, or share photos, because future schools or employers might see it.

These skills are not about fear. They are about building confidence and good judgment. When children learn them early, they are better prepared to handle the digital world with responsibility and safety.
