For years, I bought into the idea that a good mother sacrifices everything. I said yes to every school bake sale, stayed up late finishing costumes, and put my own needs last. I was exhausted, resentful, and snapping at my kids over small things. Then I realized that motherhood is a marathon, not a sprint. Running on empty doesn't make me a hero. It makes me a hazard.
So I started being "selfish." I now block out one hour every Saturday morning to read a book alone. I go to a yoga class twice a week and do not check my phone. I tell my children "Mommy needs a quiet moment" and I take it. At first, I felt guilty. I worried I was failing them. But something strange happened. When I come back from my break, I am patient. I laugh more. I listen.
My kids are learning a valuable lesson. They are learning that a woman's worth is not measured by how much she gives away. They are learning that their own future happiness depends on knowing when to say no. By taking care of myself, I am showing them what healthy boundaries look like. I am not neglecting them. I am teaching them how to respect themselves. And that is the best gift I can give.
