A growing chorus of parents and educators is raising concerns that current parenting trends, focused on constant enrichment and digital documentation, may be depriving children of a crucial developmental experience: the ability to be bored. The observation that "kids don't know how to be bored" points to a schedule-packed, screen-saturated childhood where unstructured time is rare.
Experts argue that boredom is not an enemy to be vanquished, but a catalyst for creativity, self-reflection, and internal motivation. It is in unscheduled moments that children learn to entertain themselves, solve problems, and discover their own interests. The constant provision of external stimulation, from organized activities to digital devices, can hinder the development of these vital internal resources.
Compounding this issue is the era of digital oversharing. The practice of extensively posting a child's life online, often called "sharenting," is drawing significant criticism for violating a child's privacy and autonomy. As one concerned observer noted, "They have no privacy. I saw a woman post about her daughter starting her period. Completely out of line." This creates a permanent digital footprint without the child's consent and blurs healthy boundaries.
The combined effect, critics suggest, is a generation potentially less equipped to sit with their own thoughts, manage downtime, and develop a private sense of self away from the public eye. The call is for a more balanced approach that values quiet moments and protects a child's right to a private childhood.
