Parenting in the age of ‘Tight and Pretty’

Parenting in the age of ‘Tight and Pretty’

Recently, I watched the music video for "Tight and Pretty." Let me first say that the young performer is clearly talented, confident, and comfortable on stage. I hope some of our more experienced artistes will take her under their wing and help her develop her gift, because she has the potential to become a very successful singer. I also believe she can achieve that success without relying on songs with sexually explicit lyrics.

This raises a difficult question for parents today. How do we guide our children when popular culture pushes messages that feel too mature too soon? The song and its visuals are polished and catchy, but the content is hard to ignore. Many kids see these videos and want to imitate the style, the dance moves, and the attitude. They do not always understand the adult themes behind the performance.

Parents cannot just ban everything. That often makes it more appealing. Instead, we need to have honest conversations. Ask your child what they like about the song. Talk about the difference between being confident and being sexualized. Explain that talent does not need to be wrapped in shock value to be respected.

The young singer has real ability. She could go far with the right guidance. But the burden should not fall only on her. Parents, teachers, and the industry all have a role to play. We can support young artists while also teaching our children to think critically about what they watch. That is the real challenge of parenting in this age.
