Raising a Gearhead: One Dad’s Unconventional Choice of a BMW M3 for Parenting

When Chris West’s daughter Vera was born, the logical choice for many new parents would have been a spacious, safe, and practical SUV. But West, a self-described car enthusiast, decided to take a different route. Instead of trading in his beloved BMW E36 M3 for a family-friendly crossover, he kept the sports coupe and made it an integral part of his parenting journey.

The E36 M3, a legendary model from the 1990s known for its raw driving dynamics and high-revving inline-six engine, is hardly the typical vehicle for a growing family. Yet West sees it as the perfect tool to introduce his daughter to the joys of automotive passion. “I could have gotten an SUV,” West says, “but I wanted Vera to grow up understanding what a real car feels like.” He believes the experience of riding in a driver-focused machine, with its distinct engine note and tactile feedback, offers a sensory education that no minivan can provide.

Vera, now a toddler, has become a familiar sight in the passenger seat, often seen with a smile as her father navigates winding roads. West is careful to emphasize safety, using a proper child seat and adhering to all regulations. But for him, the M3 is more than transportation—it’s a bonding tool. He hopes that by exposing her to the mechanical symphony and the thrill of a well-balanced chassis, he’s planting the seeds of a lifelong appreciation for engineering and driving.

While some might question the practicality of squeezing a car seat into a cramped back seat, West argues that the memories are worth the compromise. “She’s already pointing at other BMWs on the road,” he laughs. “She’s becoming a gearhead, one ride at a time.” For West, parenting isn’t about conforming to expectations; it’s about sharing what you love with the next generation, even if that means doing it from the driver’s seat of a 25-year-old sports car.
