Recent findings from the National Centre for Social Research have sparked a debate about the effectiveness of gentle parenting compared to more authoritative approaches. While gentle parenting promotes empathy and calm guidance, the study, which followed 6,000 children over a decade, indicates that this method may not adequately prepare children for academic challenges.
The research highlights that children raised in an authoritative environment—characterized by a balance of structure and warmth—tend to achieve better academic results by the age of 11. This raises important questions about the popular parenting style favored by many Gen Z parents, which often prioritizes kindness and emotional support.
As the study suggests, while kindness is undoubtedly important, it may not be sufficient on its own for fostering resilience and academic success in children. The findings invite parents to reconsider their approaches and potentially embrace a more balanced style that combines nurturing with clear expectations.
