Video Bosses say ‘helicopter parenting’ now extends into workplace

It used to be that helicopter parenting stopped at the college dormitory door. But now, according to a growing number of business leaders, that hovering behavior has followed young adults straight into their first full-time jobs. In a recent report, executives describe a workplace where some new hires are not the ones making the calls. Instead, it is mom or dad who is phoning the manager to question a performance review, negotiate a starting salary, or even ask for a deadline extension on a project.

The trend, which some are calling "lawnmower parenting" because it clears every obstacle from a child's path, is forcing human resources departments to adapt. Managers say they are spending valuable time explaining to parents why their adult child received a particular rating or why a promotion is not yet warranted. One hiring director noted that a candidate's mother once emailed to ask why her son did not get an offer after a second interview. Another recalled a father who demanded a meeting to discuss his daughter's "stressful" workload.

While the intent is often to help, the effect can be the opposite. Supervisors warn that this constant parental involvement undermines the employee's credibility and stunts their ability to solve problems independently. Young workers who rely on their parents to advocate for them may never learn how to have a difficult conversation with a boss or how to handle constructive criticism. Some companies have started to respond by adding clear guidelines for new hires, explicitly stating that all work-related communication must come directly from the employee. Others are training managers on how to politely but firmly redirect a parent's call back to their child. The message from leadership is simple: the office is not a classroom, and there is no parent-teacher conference.
