DSWD to boost parenting lessons after Tacloban school shooting

The Department of Social Welfare and Development is pushing to intensify and expand its parenting education programs following a shocking school shooting in Tacloban City. The incident, which involved two gunmen aged just 14 and 15, has raised urgent questions about youth violence and family supervision.

According to DSWD officials, the agency sees a clear need to strengthen the core of family support. The proposed expansion would go beyond basic child care and discipline tips. It aims to equip parents with tools to spot early signs of behavioral problems, manage anger, and build stronger communication with their children. The department believes that many young offenders come from homes where guidance is weak or inconsistent.

The Tacloban case has become a painful example. Two teenagers managed to obtain firearms and carry out an attack on a school campus. Investigators are still looking into how the minors got the weapons and what led them to such extreme violence. The DSWD hopes that better parenting lessons can prevent similar tragedies in other communities.

The agency is now working with local government units and schools to roll out the updated curriculum. Sessions will focus on practical strategies for stressed parents, especially those in low-income areas where resources are scarce. The goal is not to blame families but to give them real support before a crisis happens. No specific timeline has been announced, but the DSWD says the program will be a top priority in the coming months.
