Grand County Family Support Center offers free respite care, parenting classes and crisis support

The Grand County Family Support Center is seeing a significant rise in demand for its core programs, which include free planned respite childcare, comprehensive parenting education, and immediate crisis support. Center officials report growing enrollment as community awareness of these vital services increases.

Director Julie Nieman, who began her role in 2022, recently provided data illustrating the center's expanding impact. The planned respite program, designed to give parents a short break, has served 380 children for approximately 7,525 hours since her tenure began. During the same period, the crisis emergency care service provided 11,752 hours of support to 52 children facing urgent family situations.

Enrollment figures further underscore the growing need. The center welcomed 13 new families when Nieman started; that number has since surged to 84 enrolled families, with an additional 40 families anticipated to join. This growth highlights both the increasing challenges faced by local parents and the center's crucial role in providing stability and resources.

The center's programs are designed to strengthen families by offering practical support and education, aiming to prevent crises before they occur and provide a safety net when they do.
