Actor Joseph Fiennes has never been one to shy away from a strong opinion, and in a recent interview, he turned his focus to the intersection of parenting, politics, and the digital world. The "Shakespeare in Love" star made a pointed call for action, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take a firmer stance on children's access to social media. Fiennes argued that the current approach is failing the youngest generation, calling it a "public health crisis" that requires political courage rather than cautious deliberation.
Fiennes, a father himself, spoke about the difficulty of raising children in an age dominated by algorithms and screen time. He described the pressure parents face to allow smartphones and social accounts, even when they know the risks to mental health, sleep, and self-esteem. "It is not about being a Luddite," he said. "It is about asking what we are sacrificing for convenience." He suggested that a legal ban for children under 16, similar to proposals in other countries, would give parents the backup they need.
The actor did not spare the government from criticism. He directly addressed Starmer, saying the prime minister must recognize that this is not a side issue but a defining challenge for his tenure. "Stand up, Keir, this is your kids' generation," Fiennes said. He argued that delaying regulation only allows tech companies to profit from young users' attention spans. While some might see his comments as celebrity grandstanding, Fiennes insisted he is speaking as a concerned parent who sees the damage firsthand. The debate over children and screens continues to divide opinion, but Fiennes made it clear where he stands: on the side of action, not another report.
