But there is one conversation that often gets overlooked, even though it could change everything if a teenager ever finds themselves face to face with a police officer. Legal experts and child advocates are urging families to sit down and have a direct, honest talk about what rights their children actually have under the law.

The message is simple but powerful: stay calm, be polite, and remember the right to remain silent. Many teens, scared and unsure, feel pressured to answer every question or to argue their innocence on the spot. That can backfire. Parents need to explain that a child does not have to consent to a search of their backpack or phone without a warrant. They should also know how to clearly and respectfully say, "I want to speak to my parent or a lawyer."

This is not about teaching kids to be defiant. It is about giving them a tool to protect themselves in a high-stress moment. The goal is to help them avoid saying something that could be twisted or used against them later. A simple script can help: "Am I free to leave?" If the answer is no, they should not run or resist. They should stay silent and wait for a trusted adult.

Parents should also role-play these scenarios at home. Practice the words until they feel natural. The conversation is not meant to scare kids, but to empower them.
