A growing body of research suggests that the pressure-cooker culture of modern parenting may finally be easing. A new study indicates that the concept of "good enough" parenting is making a significant comeback, and psychologists say that is a very healthy development for families.
For years, parents have been bombarded with messages about the need for constant enrichment, perfect schedules, and flawless emotional regulation. This has led to widespread burnout and anxiety among mothers and fathers. The new research, however, points to a shift. Parents are increasingly embracing the idea that they do not need to be perfect to raise happy, well-adjusted children.
The term "good enough" was originally coined by pediatrician and psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott in the 1950s. He argued that children actually benefit from parents who are not perfectly attuned to their every need. When a parent occasionally misses a cue or fails to respond instantly, the child learns to tolerate frustration and develop resilience. The new study updates this concept for the modern era, finding that parents who let go of the pursuit of perfection report lower stress levels and better relationships with their kids.
The evidence-based concept is bringing parents a lot of relief. It frees them from the guilt of not doing enough and allows them to focus on what truly matters: a warm, responsive, and consistent relationship. The study suggests that children raised by "good enough" parents are just as likely to thrive, and often show stronger coping skills, than those raised in a high-pressure, perfectionist environment. In short, it is absolutely okay to be a good enough parent. It might just be the best thing for everyone.
