Tech Worries Keep Parents Awake, Costing 48 Nights of Sleep Per Year

Tech Worries Keep Parents Awake, Costing 48 Nights of Sleep Per Year

The average parent loses the equivalent of 48 nights of sleep each year worrying about their child, according to a new survey. And the biggest source of that anxiety? Technology.

Researchers found that concerns about screen time, social media, online safety, and digital habits now top the list of parental stressors. Many parents lie awake at night wondering if their children are spending too much time on devices, encountering harmful content, or being affected by cyberbullying. The constant pressure to monitor and manage technology use has created a new kind of parenting exhaustion that experts are calling "techxiety."

The survey, which polled thousands of parents, revealed that worries about technology outweigh traditional concerns like academic performance, peer pressure, and physical health. Parents reported feeling overwhelmed by the pace of digital change and unsure how to set boundaries without causing conflict. Many said they check their child's phone or tablet after bedtime, only to find it hard to fall back asleep themselves.

Sleep experts warn that chronic sleep loss can affect parents' mental health, patience, and ability to make good decisions. They recommend setting clear family rules around device use, creating tech-free zones in the home, and turning off notifications during evening hours. Some parents have started using old-fashioned alarm clocks instead of phones to avoid late-night scrolling.

The findings highlight a growing tension between the benefits of technology and the toll it takes on family life. As one parent put it, "I never thought I'd lose sleep over a tablet, but here we are."
