Writer Shannon Colleary is well aware that modern parenting experts warn against focusing on a child's appearance. They say praise should center on effort, kindness, and intelligence, not looks. But Colleary admits she ignores that advice every single day. She tells her daughter she is pretty all the time, and she has no plans to stop.
Colleary argues that calling a child beautiful is not the same as reducing her worth to her looks. She sees it as a simple, loving affirmation. In a world where girls are bombarded with impossible beauty standards and constant criticism, she believes a parent's voice should be the loudest and kindest one. She wants her daughter to hear "you are pretty" from home before she hears anything different from the outside world.
She also points out that parents of sons rarely face this debate. No one tells a father to stop calling his son handsome. The double standard frustrates her. For Colleary, the word "pretty" is not a trap. It is a gift. It is a way to build a foundation of confidence that her daughter can carry into a world that will try to tear it down. She knows the experts mean well, but she trusts her gut more. Her daughter's smile, she says, is worth every rule she breaks.
