There is a strange contradiction at the heart of parenting: you spend years teaching your child to need you, and then you have to teach them how not to. You tie their shoelaces, solve their problems, and speak for them when they are little. Then, almost overnight, you have to step back and let them stumble, fail, and figure things out on their own. It is one of the hardest shifts a parent can make, and Michelle Obama recently spoke about why it is so important to start early.

She pointed out that by the time a child is sixteen, the training wheels should already be off. If a teenager still cannot handle basic responsibilities, manage their own schedule, or deal with conflict without running to a parent, then something has gone wrong. Her point is not about being harsh or distant. It is about giving children the space to develop their own judgment while the stakes are still low. A mistake at ten is a lost toy. A mistake at sixteen is a bad grade or a broken friendship. A mistake at twenty-five can be a bad marriage or a ruined credit score.

The philosophy is simple: you want your child to be independent long before they actually have to be. That means letting them make choices you do not agree with, letting them feel the consequences, and resisting the urge to rescue them every time they struggle. It is uncomfortable to watch your child fail. But if you never let them fail when you are around to help them pick up the pieces, they will fail much harder when you are not. The goal is to raise an adult, not to keep a child forever.
