'Call me uncool, but I don't allow my child to have sleepovers': Parenting expert explains why she says no

A growing number of modern parents are rewriting the traditional rules of childhood, often saying yes to experiences that were once strictly off-limits. But one parenting expert is taking a firm stand in the opposite direction, openly banning sleepovers for her own child and urging others to consider the same.

In a recent discussion, the expert explained that while she understands the social pressure to let kids participate in overnight stays, she believes the risks simply outweigh the benefits. "Call me uncool, but I don't allow my child to have sleepovers," she stated. Her reasoning goes beyond simple anxiety. She points to the lack of direct supervision in another family's home, the potential for unmonitored access to screens or the internet, and the difficulty of ensuring that other parents share the same safety standards.

She also highlighted the emotional toll on children who may feel uncomfortable but struggle to speak up in a peer setting. Instead of sleepovers, she recommends structured daytime playdates that end before bedtime, or hosting the gathering at her own home where she can maintain control. While some critics argue that this approach is overly protective, the expert insists that a parent's job is to prioritize safety over popularity. "I would rather be the 'uncool' mom than deal with a situation I could have prevented," she added, sparking a fresh debate on how much freedom is too much for today's kids.
